Motability FAQ

At Mon Motors Group, we have a broad range of vehicles available through the Motability scheme and whether you are already a customer or completely new to the scheme you may have questions that we are happy to help answer. Below you will find a list of the most frequently asked questions our experienced staff are asked when it comes to the Motability scheme.

Q. What is the Motability Scheme?

The Mobility Scheme enables disabled people to lease a new car. The worry-free Motability package comes with:

  • A new car every three years, many with no Advance Payment
  • Insurance with RSA Motability
  • Breakdown support
  • Servicing, maintenance and repair support
  • Adaptations, many at no additional expense

Q. Do I qualify for the Motability Scheme?

To qualify for the Motability scheme you have to receive one of the following Government funded allowances:

  • Higher Rate Motability Component of the Disability Living Allowance
  • Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

To completely qualify for the Motability scheme you also need a minimum of 12 months’ benefit payments remaining. There is no upper age limit on the scheme. If you are the parent or guardian of a child above the age of three that is receiving HRMC DLA you could also qualify for the Motability scheme.

Q. Can I join the Motability scheme with Mon Motors Group if I am over 65?

Yes, if you are over the age of 65 and are receiving either of the two Government funded allowances you may still qualify for the Motability scheme with Mon Motors Group:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component (HRMC) of the Disability Allowance (DLA)
  • War Pensioner’s Mobility Supplement (WPMS)

Q. Can I test drive a Motability vehicle?

At Mon Motors Group we feel that it is essential that you take a test drive, even if you are the passenger in the car you will be getting. It is an excellent chance to take a look at the seating, experience the accessibility of the car and to ensure there is enough space for you and any equipment you may have. We recommend you doing this before placing an order as it helps you understand what vehicle or adaptations you may need. Test drives can be arranged at one of our Mon Motors Group franchised dealerships.

Q. What is an ‘Advance Payment’ and do I have to pay it?

An ‘Advance Payment’ is an upfront cost that covers the difference between the cost of your car and your allowance. An ‘Advance Payment’ is not a deposit and you won’t have this payment refunded. Only some of the higher specification cars require an ‘Advance Payment’ and you will only have to pay it if you choose one of these models.

Q. Do I have a mileage limit on my Motability vehicle?

You have a 60,000 mileage limit on a three year contract hire lease and will be charged 5p a mile if you exceed your limit.

Q. Do I have to pay for car tax on my Motability vehicle?

No, Motability with Mon Motors Group will supply you with car tax every year as part of your Motability package.

Q. Is anybody apart from me allowed to drive the car?

The Motability scheme allows an additional two named drivers on the Motability insurance policy that meet the RSA Motability’s criteria. The Motability car can only be used by the disabled person or for their assistance.

Q. My medical condition has changed, what do I need to do?

As long as your doctor has allowed you to continue driving, you have notified the DVLA and you’re still receiving your Disability Living Allowance you are not required to do anything else.

Q. Am I entitled to ‘no claims’ bonus?

No, because Motability Operations owns the car and RSA Motability do not offer a ‘no claims discount’ bonus. For more information about this, please contact RSA Motability.
