Motability Explained

The Motability scheme is overseen by Motability, a registered charity in the UK. Today there are in excess of 630,000 people benefiting from the Motability scheme. Motability want to offer all customers a worry-free mobility solution. If you are eligible and choose to join the Motability scheme, you will benefit from a worry-free mobility solution that includes:

  • A brand new car, powered wheelchair or scooter every three years, or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) every five years
  • Insurance, servicing and maintenance
  • Full breakdown assistance
  • Annual vehicle tax
  • Replacement tyres (and batteries for scooters and wheelchairs)
  • Windscreen repair or replacement
  • 60,000 mileage allowance over three years for cars; 100,000 for WAVs
  • Many adaptations at no extra cost
  • Two named drivers for your car

You could be eligible to lease a car using your Government funded allowance. You will also need a minimum of 12 months’ benefit payments remaining to be able to qualify completely.

Your Motability package will cover the majority of costs you would normally have when owning and running a car, such as insurance, road tax, servicing and maintenance. But, there are some costs that you will be responsible for such as:

  • Fuel costs
  • Any added accessories you put in your car
  • Advanced payments if you choose a higher specification car
  • Optional adaptations that come at an extra cost
  • Repair costs of any cosmetic damage through neglect or misuse of the car

At the end of your three year contract you will be given three choices, you can hand your car back and choose a brand new car for another three years, ask to keep your current car and pay any outstanding finance owing or you can return your car to the dealership and have your Disability Living Allowance reinstated. You will be sent a letter with your options about three months before the end of your contract giving you plenty of time to make a decision or to order your new vehicle.
