For over a quarter of a century, Audi has been combining ultra-sportiness with practicality – and the updated RS 4 Avant that proud tradition.

Sometimes, less is more. That thought may have been in the minds of Audi’s designers when they removed the frame from the single-frame grille of the latest RS 4 Avant. The crisp, clean look, with the RS 4 emblem inserted directly into the bumper, is a key feature of the Audi Sport redesign of the car, and like the ultra-high-performance RS 6 Avant and RS 7 Sportback, the grille now also features a gloss-black three-dimensional honeycomb structure. It’s a striking evolution in design for this updated version of the RS 4, which also features a full technological upgrade, and is on sale now.

Nestling under the RS 4 Avant’s elegantly sculpted bonnet, the 2.9 TFSI twin-turbo V6 engine can trace its spiritual lineage back to the legendary 2.7-litre V6 of the first RS 4 Avant in 1999. This latest model musters a mighty 600Nm and a heady 450PS, delivering slingshot-like acceleration that dispenses with the sprint from zero to 62mph in a mere 4.1 seconds. Top speed is electronically governed to 155mph, but is increased to 174mph on the Vorsprung trim level. And while Audi Sport’s engineers clearly don’t believe that less is more when it comes to performance, the RS 4’s V6 engine weighs 31kg less than the V8 in the previous model, which enhances agility and driving pleasure.

One of the most sophisticated quattro all-wheel-drive systems Audi has ever developed ensures that the RS 4 transfers its prodigious power to the road, whatever the weather. For pin-sharp handling in challenging conditions, the Electronic Stabilisation Control can (very gently) brake the wheels on the inside of the bend. This increases the driving force on the wheels on the outside of the curve, turning the car into the corner even more precisely. In addition, a standard-fit RS-specific quattro sport differential varies the driving force between the rear wheels in the blink of an eye to elevate traction, stability, handling and sheer driving pleasure to another level.

Priced from £64,600, the RS 4 Avant is offered in three trim levels: RS 4, Carbon Black and Vorsprung. All benefit from the latest Audi Connect technologies and operating systems, and are equipped with a 10.1-inch MMI touch display, Audi Phone Box with wireless charging and fully digital Audi Virtual Cockpit. The latter features specific RS displays that give information on tyre pressure, torque, power output, engine oil temperature, lap timings, acceleration and g-forces. In addition, a shift light display prompts the driver to change gear when the rev limit is reached. On a long drive, you can sink into the sumptuous, Fine Nappa leather-finished RS Super Sport heated front seats with pneumatic massage function, set the Dynamic Ride Control suspension to Comfort, and soak up the miles with consummate ease.
