Last week, Mon Motors Volvo Cars Cardiff joined the Welsh Disabled Golf Association (WDGA) at Bryn Meadows Golf Club for their annual golf day, celebrating three years of partnership and a shared commitment to promoting inclusivity, opportunity, and the power of sport.
A winning partnership
Beyond his connection with Mon Motors, James is a passionate sportsman with strong links to a number of organisations. In 2023, we were proud to support James and the WDGA, including his trip to California where he represented Wales on the international stage. In 2024, we continued our support as the team travelled to Dublin for the Tri-Nations Tournament between England, Ireland, and Wales, alongside the annual Brian Mayo Cup.
Celebrating partnership on the course
For the third consecutive year, Volvo Cars Cardiff and the WDGA came together at Bryn Meadows Golf Club to celebrate their partnership with a fantastic day of golf.
The event provided the perfect opportunity for golfers and the Volvo team to enjoy a round together whilst reconnecting and reflecting on the journey they have shared over the years.
The warm-up
The day began with warm welcomes as guests arrived, creating an inclusive and relaxed atmosphere that sparked both meaningful and light-hearted conversations over fresh coffee and bacon rolls.
As golfers prepared for a memorable day on the course, anticipation grew for the friendly competition ahead.
Discovering the Volvo EX90
The team from Volvo Cars Cardiff brought along the all-new Volvo EX90, Volvo's flagship fully electric SUV, giving guests the opportunity to explore the vehicle up close.
The EX90 attracted plenty of attention throughout the morning, with attendees impressed by its premium Scandinavian design, spacious interior, and everyday practicality.
And, with a group of golfers taking a closer look around the vehicle, one question was always going to come up:
"Will my golf clubs fit?"
Fortunately, the answer was a simple yes, with the EX90's generous boot space providing more than enough room for clubs and equipment, making it perfectly suited to both everyday journeys and days spent on the course.
Taking to the course
With golf clubs packed and buggies at the ready, teams gathered before heading out onto the course to get play underway.
Blessed with favourable conditions and no need for waterproofs this time, golfers enjoyed a fantastic round in the sunshine, accompanied by plenty of friendly competition and opportunities to network with fellow players.
The event showcased not only excellent golf but also the camaraderie, encouragement, and support that make the Welsh Disabled Golf Association such a special organisation.
Celebrating the winners
After a memorable day on the fairways, guests enjoyed a well-earned buffet dinner in the clubhouse before the presentation of prizes, with crystal glasses and golf balls awarded to the day's winners and, of course, a cap for the recipient of the wooden spoon.
Each year, golfers of the WDGA play for the Brian Mayo Cup, with the winners' names engraved after each competition.
Dedicated to preserving the legacy and memory of Brian Mayo, the trophy stands proudly in the trophy cabinet of Bryn Meadows, its spiritual home, serving as a memento to the club’s late owner, Brian Mayo.
Brian was a golfer who became an amputee after contracting meningitis and losing both of his legs. Remarkably, his determination and resilience saw him return to the golf course just six weeks after leaving hospital.
His incredible story continues to inspire members of the Welsh Disabled Golf Association today, making the trophy a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy and impact on the game.
Continuing our support for inclusive sport
What another amazing day of golf. It was fantastic to see both familiar and new faces on the course, and everyone at Mon Motors Volvo Cars Cardiff looks forward to continuing this journey in support of the Welsh Disabled Golf Association for years to come.
